Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from her aunt Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve as a tool for activism. Her mother was also a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate by means of artwork. DuVernay was a child together with her parents in Compton was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English and African American study. DuVernay was a college student when she started to get attracted to the field of production for broadcast journalism. DuVernay began her career as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the waste belonging to one of the jury. The tasks that she had to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision to not pursue journalism, she moved on to the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an intern at an unassuming studio. The year 1999 was the time she established her own firm of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Alongside PR, the agency has created lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
